securing your wireless network

Now on this hub I have the steps on how you can enable a password for your wireless network. This will make your wireless network secured and make sure no one can use your internet via wireless unless they know the password for it. These steps will apply to your Dlink wireless access point only they might have different options on how to do this step on a Dlink wireless router. Now the options, settings, and terminologies on this hub may differ if you have an older version of software or firmware. This hub is recommended for these model DWL-2210AP.

Here is what you need do. You need to access the setup page of your Dlink Access Point.

1. Connect a computer directly to the access point (via Ethernet). Then assign an IP address on the computer (IP: 192.168.0.10 Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 DG: 192.168.0.1 ). It is necessary for you to assign an IP address to your computer because your access point does not have the ability to assign an IP address to the computer, it's is not like a router.

2. After you assigned an IP address, you can now access the Dlink Access point's setup page. To do that open just your browser in the address bar type http://192.168.0.50/ (this is the address of your access point) and it will ask you to put a username and password just type "admin" for both username and password field. And it will take you to the setup page of the access point.

3. To enable a wireless security, just click the tab on the left hand side that says Advanced, it will populate the options under Advanced and select Security. On the main screen you will now have an option for Security Modem, you can select WPA-PSK, and then on the Key box you can type any password that you want (8-63 characters can be alphanumeric). Then click Update at the bottom of the page. If you also want to change the name (SSID) that the Access point is broadcasting you can click on Wireless on the left hand side and put any name that you want on the box that says SSID. After that click update button again.

4. Now after updating the settings, you can reconnect to the network. And this time you will now see the new name of your network, which you have set it to. And if you will try to connect to it, it will ask now for the network key. Just type your network key and confirm it if you need to. And that's it you are done setting up a secured wireless network using your Dlink Access Point.

I hope this has been informative and helpful to you.

Thank you for viewing and have a nice day!

This might help you.

3. Go to setup tab ----> wireless settings ----> Wireless Network Setup Wizard (after this we're gonna do manual settings)

3.1 give your network a name= SSID (e.g. 'grobar')

3.2.Automatically assign a network key (Recommended) and chose WAP or WAP2

3.3 Write down the network key!!! Or do printscr and save this page.

Right here you're pretty much set but please do step 4 as well!!!

4. Go to setup tab ----> wireless settings ---->Manual Wireless Network Setup

4.1

Wireless Network Settings

Enable Wireless : ALWAYS

Wireless Network Name : (Also called the SSID) the name you gave in 3.1

802.11 Mode : chose "mixed 802.11n,g and b"

Enable Auto Channel Scan : YES

Wireless Channel : AUTO

Transmission Rate : BEST (Mbit/s)

Channel Width : AUTO 20/40 MHz

Visibility Status : !!!Invisible!!! (so that no outsiders know your SSID except you)

4.2

Wireless Security Mode : WPA-Personal

4.3

WPA mode: WPA2 only

Cipher type: AES

Group key update interval : 3600 seconds

4.4

Pre-Shared Key : the one that you generated (and wrote down somewhere) in 3.2. , you can change this key if you want but I suggest to leave it as is...

OK, now you're all set but if you did step 4, you can't see your network cause its status is set to invisible. So go to the upper right corner on your ubuntu desktop: click on the computer icon, click enable networking, click enable wireless and the click connect to other network.

Now you enter:

your SSID name that you entered in 3.1

wireless security: WPA2 personal

type: AES

enter password that you've generated in 3.2 (or 4.4)

You would think that dlink would make it easy and obvious on how to set up a secure wireless network. Why can't they have a BIG button with simple easy to understand terminology? I've been through the manual 3 times and left confused. Thanks for the advice Curly.
