Jejemon?
What: Jejemon is a term used to classify people mostly found in social networking sites (like Facebook, Friendsters, Multiply, etc) who has their own/unique way in constructing their messages. In my own understanding the word “jejemon” was derived from the following words, “jeje” how jejemons type the chat or text laughing expression “hehe”, and the suffix “mon” that I hope I am wrong to say that this word means monster like in Pokemon (Pocket Monster) of Digimon (Digital Monster). Their way of writing is unique because they combine all keyboard functions to compose their messages. For Jejemons messages that looks more gibberish the better.
Who and Where: Jejemons are people who are mostly found in the networking sites. But does anybody know what their nationality is? Or where they originated? Jejemons originated from Philippines. Yes, they are Asian. I can say that these Jejemons are mostly the teenagers of this generation. The Philippines known as the texting capital of the world, I can say that these Jejemons started their way through text messaging. This is where jejemon writings were commonly practiced, and later on taken to another level in the networking sites mentioned above and in chat services like Yahoo messenger and the likes.
And just recently, they gained popularity and I guess that is because of this unique and catchy alias given to these group of people practicing this kind of art if you may want to call it that way.
What’s good about this?
Some experts say that this is one proof that the artistic side of the Filipinos are still working, specially the teenagers of this generation. They found their own way to uniquely express themselves. This jejemon thing can be compared to other trends that were popular in the Philippines like the “Gay lingo”, 70’s way of speaking, and “Jeproks” to mention a few.
What’s bad about this?
This brands Filipinos a bad reputation, foreigner’s thinks that this applies to all Filipinos. They will say that they are uneducated and don’t know who to write like a civilized human being. I find it a bit harsh, especially if this being applied to the majority of the Filipinos. I think this may be too much, can’t we just leave them alone? And does this affect who they are as a human being also created by God like the rest of the people that inhabits planet Earth?
And since this is the young generation practicing this, there is a great chance that his may affect their way of writing and spelling. Hopefully not.
I hope hub will give you more information about the Jejemons. By the way, people who are against this trend are called Jejebusters.
Here is how a typical Jejemon will write his/her message. I hope you all understand it.
