Windows cannot configure this wireless network.

Windows cannot configure....
One of the common complaints that I receive from most of the customers that has a problem getting online with their wireless are "I can't connect to the wireless network", "My computer can't find the network" or they will say that their computer is not picking up the signal. Now, the moment you check the wireless connection and try to connect to the network what you will see is "Windows cannot configure this wireless network. If you have enabled another program to manage this network use that program".
Readers, try to understand the message. It's not really telling you that there is no signal around, it's all about the program that you are using to view the available networks. It's not the right one. You might be wondering, how on earth did my computer get this message when it was working before without this message. The answer is I don't know. What I can tell you is that on your laptop or desktop running on Windows XP there is a builtin program from Windows that can manage the wireless connection and that is called the Wireless Zero Configuration, if you dont know what it is, that is the screen that will give you that message mentioned above. And this is a common problem with people who has a laptop that has a builtin wireless adapter because the builtin adapter manufacturer also have their own program to manage their wireless adapter, why dont just stick to the one software to stop us getting confused and looking stupid with this problem. And if you have the Wireless Zero Configuratio and the Software of the Manufacturer of the wireless adapter you can't run them both at the same time. Guys, it's one at a time. And if you have a laptop sometimes is the software of the manufacturer that is the default program used by your computer.
Let me share with you guys on how you can get rid of this messsage and use the Wireless Zero Configuration to connection to the wireless if you are using Windows XP.
There are a bunch of ways on how to enable the Windows Wireless Zero Configuration. But I can say that this one would be the easiest.Just follow these steps:
1. Click on Start and go to Run.
2. In run type "services.msc" (without the quotes) and hit OK.
3. On the left hand panel make sure you higlight Services (Local).
4. On the right hand side look for Wireless Zero Configuration (Items here are listed alphabetically).
5. Right click on Wireless Zero Configuration and click on Properties.
6. In Properties, set the Startup type to Automatic then hit Apply and OK.
This will not make the Wireless Zero Configuration as your default program to manage the wireless connection. This is the icon at the bottom right hand side of your screen that looks like a computer with signals comint out of it.

What's happening?
i agree with steve A. this did not work for me. i still get the same message when trying to view available networks. how is it possible to set Wireless Zero as a default and still get this message?
Steve & Thatguy,
Sorry that it did not work for you. Not sure too what it happening with your computers but here are other things that you could try, first is this:
1. Click Start, click Run, type ncpa.cpl, and then click OK. (Or just go to Control panel)
2. Click Network Connections.
3. In Network Connections, click to select your wireless connection, and
then click Change settings of this connection.
4. On the Wireless Networks tab, click to select the Use Windows to
configure my wireless network
settings check box.
The other thing you can also do is disable the third party program it self. These programs has an option to use the Windows program to manage the wireless. The only challenge here is there is no standard procedure on how you can do this. Different software manufacturers has their own tab and location and setting labels on how do this. What I can only suggest is do these:
1. Check or look for the wireless program in Programs or All Programs. Example, Dell Wireless Utility or Intel ProSet Wireless.
2. Check all the tabs or pages you can go to on the program and look for something that would say Don't use this program to manage wireless or Use windows to manage your wireless, usually this is a setting that you can put a check or unchecked.
I hope this will help.
I think you left out that you right click and select "start". Until I did that, it wasn't started, even though I selected Automatic in the dialog box.
